How is the GAMSAT overall score calculated? ACER adds Section 1, Section 2 and twice Section 3, then divides by four.

See the Section 3 score it needs with your other two sections.

Questions people ask

How is the GAMSAT overall score calculated?

ACER adds Section 1, Section 2 and twice Section 3, then divides by four. Section 3 therefore counts for half the overall.

Why is my GAMSAT overall different from my own calculation?

ACER calculates the overall before rounding the section scores, so working from the rounded sections on your statement can be out by up to half a mark. The overall on your statement is the official one.

Which universities do not weight Section 3?

GEMSAS lists Melbourne, Queensland and Notre Dame (Fremantle, Broome and Sydney) as equal-weight schools. Wollongong uses GAMSAT only as a hurdle.

What is the minimum GAMSAT score?

Most GEMSAS schools ask for at least 50 in each section and 50 overall. Notre Dame asks for a 52 average and Western Australia for 55 overall. These are minimums to apply, not cut-offs.

How we work this out

What it does

Enter your three section scores for your GAMSAT overall, the plain average and the Section 3 score a target needs.

GAMSAT section scores from 0 to 100 for Section 1 (reasoning in humanities and social sciences), Section 2 (written communication) and Section 3 (reasoning in biological and physical sciences), all from the same sitting.

Method

  1. ACER's overall score is (Section 1 + Section 2 + 2 x Section 3) / 4, so Section 3 counts twice. Example: 60, 70 and 50 give (60 + 70 + 100) / 4 = 57.5.
  2. The plain average is (Section 1 + Section 2 + Section 3) / 3. GEMSAS lists Melbourne, Queensland and Notre Dame as using it: 60, 70 and 50 give 60.0.
  3. For a target overall T, Section 3 needs (4 x T - Section 1 - Section 2) / 2. With 60 and 70, a weighted 65 needs 65 in Section 3.
  4. Each extra Section 3 point adds 0.5 to the weighted overall; a Section 1 or 2 point adds 0.25.
