Chemistry unit 5
Two stable solutes X and Y absorb light independently. For a 1 cm cell their absorbances are A(400)=2x+y and A(500)=x+3y, where x and y are concentrations in a common arbitrary unit. Absorbances add and the solvent blank is zero unless stated otherwise. A mixture gives A(400)=7 and A(500)=6. A second instrument may introduce the same additive baseline offset at both wavelengths. No reaction occurs on mixing.
