Chemistry unit 9

Gas A reacts on a solid surface. A second gas B does not react but competes for the same sites. A proposed initial-rate model is v = vmax KA pA/(1+KA pA+KB pB), where pA and pB are partial pressures and KA and KB are positive adsorption constants. Each site holds at most one molecule. Define a=KA pA and b=KB pB. Surface structure and temperature remain fixed. The fraction of empty sites is 1/(1+a+b).
