What each essay is marked on
ACER lists two broad criteria for Section 2, thought and content and organisation and expression, and the features within each. Mia marks each one on its own, with a level from needs work to strong. The levels are our reading for practice, not an ACER score.
- What you make of the task
Thought and content: how the response reads the four statements and the theme they share, and what it builds from them: a clear line of thought that goes beyond agreeing or disagreeing with one statement.
- The thoughts you offer
Thought and content: the quality of the ideas: whether examples are explained rather than named, whether the view is tested against a limit, an exception or another way of seeing it, and whether the thinking is the writer's own rather than pre-prepared.
- Shape and form
Organisation and expression: how the piece is built: an opening that sets a direction, paragraphs that each move the thinking on, and an ending that follows from the discussion. A personal or reflective shape is as valid as an argument.
- Language
Organisation and expression: how clearly, precisely and fluently the language carries the thinking: word choice, sentence control and tone that suit the topic. Spelling and punctuation slips are not counted.
How the pack works
