The three sections
| Section | What you do | Minutes | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences | 62 multiple-choice questions | 100 | Test centre |
| 2. Written Communication | 2 writing tasks | 65 | Online, remote proctored |
| 3. Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences | 75 multiple-choice questions | 150 | Test centre |
Written Communication is sat first. Sections 1 and 3 follow about three weeks later, on one day, with a break between them. Every multiple-choice question has four options, and no marks are deducted for a wrong answer.
Section 3 is 40% chemistry, 40% biology, 20% physics. Calculators are not allowed.
How GAMSAT is scored
You get a score from 0 to 100 for each section and an overall score. They are scaled scores, not percentages. Section 3 counts twice:

Questions people ask
What does GAMSAT stand for?
Graduate Medical School Admissions Test. ACER, the Australian Council for Educational Research, writes and runs it.
Who needs to sit GAMSAT?
Applicants to graduate-entry medicine in Australia, Ireland and the UK, and to some dentistry, optometry, pharmacy and podiatry programs. In most cases you need to have finished, or be enrolled in, a bachelor degree.
What are Sections 1, 2 and 3?
Section 1 is Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences, Section 2 is Written Communication and Section 3 is Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences. ACER now uses the names; the numbers are the long-standing shorthand.
How long is GAMSAT?
5.25 hours of test time over two sittings. Written Communication takes 65 minutes online with a remote proctor. About three weeks later, Humanities (100 minutes) and Sciences (150 minutes) are sat together at a test centre.
Do I need a science degree for GAMSAT?
No. ACER says graduates of any field can sit it and succeed. The Sciences section does expect first-year university chemistry and biology and Year 12 physics, so non-science graduates need to learn that material.
How many times can I sit GAMSAT?
As often as you like. It runs twice a year, in March and September, and you can apply with your best result while it is still current.
How long is a GAMSAT score valid?
4 consecutive years for Australian programs and 2 for the UK and Ireland.
